IMG has extended its contract to distribute the broadcast and sponsorship rights for ice hockey’s Spengler Cup, the annual international clubs tournament held in Switzerland.IMG first began its involvement with the ice hockey competition in 2007.
Armin Meier, managing director of IMG Schweiz, the agency’s Swiss arm, said: "The long-term collaboration guarantees the continuity of the marketing strategy of this legendary tournament."
Furthermore, it has been confirmed the number of teams will rise from five to six in time for the 2010 Spengler Cup. The extra team is expected to come from Switzerland, joining the hosts HC Davos.
Meier said: "The Spengler Cup needs a second Swiss team to increase the athletic attractiveness of the tournament."
The 2009 Spengler Cup will take place at the end of this year and will feature five teams.
